1 Yr Anniv Jan 19Th

Hi, I was asked to tell about how my year has gone.
first, my name is Pattie, I got banded in Jan 2011...it's going real slow for me, but as long as I don't gain, then I'm happy.
I had an identical twin sister who had the RuNY done 5 years prior and because she ran into complications, I decided it wasn't for me, so I went with the Lap Band.
She passed May 19th 2011 sadly but felt after being on dialysis it was her time, so she stopped all her meds and dialysis...but before passing she had lost almost 200 pounds so she was just about at her goal weight...it's a shame she didn't get to enjoy.
I have lost so far 43 pounds, and at a year I thought I would have lost more, but I'm not giving up.
I had a half cc fill on the 19th which was my yr anniv...but it isn't settling with me this time...I fall to sleep and regurgitate which wakes me up, not sure what I should do because every time I go see Dr., Valentine's assistant Annie I have to pay a co-pay and it's hard on the budget.
Has anyone else gone through that after a fill?
Last time something like that happened which was 4 mos ago, I ended up getting an infection the hospital thought was pneumonia and it wasn't because as soon as I called Annie, she had me go in so she could take a half of cc back out and I felt much better there after.
I sure hope and pray I don't have to do that again...to date I have had 11 fills, not sure if that's the norm or not, I would love any feed back from any of you.

Thank you~Pattie

Weight Loss Has Stopped

I am so frustrated I was banded 7/21/11 and have lost 23 pounds, some of that was from the pre-op diet. I have had 6 fills. I am not even really sure how much I have in there because at one point the PA-C pulled all the fluid out to see how much was there and she said 5cc but said not all of the fluid will come out when you do this, so it was an approx number. I feel a little restriction after my last fill. I am worried that they will fill it to its capacity and I will still have no restriction. I want to lose 30 more pounds. Please some one tell me this is normal. I have an appt in two weeks, for another fill, she said she will only do half a cc from this point on because she doesn't want to go over board.

Lower Bmi: 5'5 And 219lbs. Anyone Like Me?

I was meant to have my surgery on 1/3/2012. However, due to an ins glitch, it was pushed to the middle to the end of Jan. No big deal. I am on my own pre-op diet for now and will follow my surgeons diet two weeks before the surgery. In the past two weeks, I have been hovering between 950-1250 cal a day and have gone from 219 to 211 since Dec 8, 2011. I am happy with my progress thus far. If I can come down another 5 lbs before surgery, I think that's perfect. It's funny, I have been getting mixed reviews from people regarding the surgery. I work in a medical school and I am surrounded by physicians all day long. Some of them think i am too thin and others who really know me, think it's a great idea. I have been struggling with my weight since I was 9 years old. I have gained and lost 35+ pounds more times than I can count. This time around I lost 35 lbs and gained 70lbs putting me at 219lbs. I now have hypertension, pre-diabetic, hyperlipidemia and moderate sleep apnea. I am active. I am a yoga teacher (not teaching currently, because who wants a fat yoga teacher?lol). I bike and walk as well. It's my eating that needs to be nipped in the bud. My doc thinks that I am an excellent candidate because he doesn't have to get me off the couch to exercise and my weight loss goals are far from hefty. I don't eat bad foods, it's the volume that I have to control. Anyone else like me?

Band Vs Sleeve......

Hi all I just found this site after cruising a different blog site. My head is spinning with all the research I've done on the band. On a whim I went to a sleeve support group meeting earlier this week and started entertaining the sleeve. I'm just curious to know if anyone considered the sleeve and what led to your decision to do the band. I'm only into my 2nd month of my PCP/Dietician visits so I have a few months to go. The band seems to require a bit more maintenance. Just looking for some feedback. Thanks in advance.

Realize Band in Mexico

I was banded 11/3/11 in Tijuana by Dr. Ortiz and Dr. Martinez. Obesity Control Center staff were great help. I chose OCC for two reasons: 1) I didn't want to play the insurance game and have to wait six months and spend countless hours in countless appointments just so some insurance underwriter could determine if I could have the surgery, and 2) all my research indicated that Dr. Ortiz is the best.

OCC allowed me to take control of my weight loss and move forward with my life. After six days post-op the liquids are getting a little boring, but I'm seeing results. I have some soreness at the portal site, and if I turn the wrong way it hurts, but i'm feeling great. I take tylenol if I really need it.

I have my surgeon's cell phone number and can call if I have any questions. So far the experience has been positive. Good luck!

GERD and the lap band

This is my first post in this group. Maybe I'm not in the right forum..if so, please direct me. Thanks for your attention.

It's 3 years since I had my lap band installed. It's been generally successful...as of today, I've lost 27 k6 (about 60 lbs). I've gone from a size 46 waist to size 39. Thanks to the procedure and diet, I've been able to stop diabetes and blood pressure medications.

For the past year I've had a hellish situation with GERD. The condition is not new to me... it started when I was in high school (I'm now aged 69). when there was really no name and no diagnosis, just hearburn and a cough. It's been quiet and well-controlled with medication for at least 30 years. Just a year ago, tho, the monster reared its ugly head and is torturing me.

The worst part is not being able to sleep in bed. I finish eating (a light meal) by 8PM and plan to go to bed at 11. At best, at that time I can go to sleep in a tv recliner- and some time in the middle of the night can usually crawl into bed and sleet until morning. But not always...some nights there's lots of coughing, some nights its coughing and regurgitation. I'm on 40mg of omepredex twice a day. Have cut out coffee, chocolate and most vegetables.
My bed is on bricks.

Any suggestions??

I had my surgery 17 months ago. I lost some but not a lot...40 lbs, however I have maintained the loss. I never felt "full" and I could eat whatever I wanted without problems...bad, I know. A few months ago I got the flu and vomited pretty bad. Now if I eat too much or too fast, or "bad" food like bread I instantly throw up. There is not any pain, just in my chest after I throw up. I feel like the band is finally working but after 17 months I am worried something is wrong. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Thanks.

Banded in Mexico

I got my Realize Band 9/9/11 from Dr. Ortiz in Tijuana Mexico. I believe its called the swedish realize band and it has a capacity of 11cc. I had a great experience at the Obesity Control Center. My surgery took less than 30 min. I was in my hotel 2 hours later and went shopping for Retin-A the same eve.. By evening of the next day I was back home in Las Vegas. Dr Ortiz wants his patients to stay on full liquids for a whole 3 weeks which will be over for me on friday.
I never had any problems with gas but I can burp like a sailor, lol
I am planing to go back for my fills for 2 reasons.
1. At the OCC they do the fills under fluoroscopy.
2. Here in Las Vegas local surgeons have little regards for patients who went to Mexico.

My main reason i choose Dr. Ortiz was for his experience. After I went to the OCC for a consultation there wasn't a doubt in my mind where to have my band !!!
I never needed any pain meds and by now you can hardly see my incisions any more.
I can e-mail or call my doctor and nutritionist at any time . I even have Dr. Ortiz' cell phone number.
When my own physician ( she is also my friend) questioned my sanity for going to Mexico, Dr. Ortiz called her from Germany where he was at an WLS convention as a key note speaker.
I hope to connect with fellow swedish realize bandsters....

I researched everything and it took me over a year to get all of the requirements done that my insurance insists on. I will be 40 in November and I have never been thin. My daughter is three and I would like to be a heck of a lot smaller for her first day of kindergarten. I want to break the cycle of obesity in my family. I know this is not going to be easy but nothing much in my life has been easy to this point and I have not let that stop me. I have not been told that I have to do a pre-op diet but I have heard that it makes everything easier. What is the best pre-op diet to follow?

New Life, New Me

Hi All. I am a 36 year old female with two children and was just recently banded. I would like to share my story with anyone who is interested. It is a long emotional story. I hope this helps someone out and encourages others.

I have been on a weight loss journey just about my whole adult life, but in the summer of 2008 is when I realized I had to do something NOW to get a hold of my weight. I was at 400 lbs. So I started then with a serious weight loss and exercize program that I created myself and by the first of the year, I had stopped losing so I decided to make an appointment to see a Bariatric Surgeon and discuss surgery. My first consultation was on my 34th birthday Feb. 11, 2009. At that time I was at 386 lbs. They told me that I had to lose down to 350 before they would even consider doing surgery. So off they sent me. I tried, got discouraged, and lost connection with the surgeon's office. A year later, I decided to try again. I called and went back to be re-evaluated. I had lost a total of 5 lbs in that year. April 2010 I weighed 381 and decided to dedicate myself to the process. The office changed policy and required monthly weight checks to keep people on the right path. By July 2010 I was down to 364. Then my insurance policy changed and they now required a one year weight loss trial before approval. I had to join Weight Watchers and talk to a Life Coach twice a month for one year. This was a major disappointment to me but I decided that it was worth it and I was dedicated. I stopped the weight checks and just worked with my Life Coach and did WW online. WW did not work for me but my one year wait was up on Aug 11 2011. What I learned in this year is that every day is a new day and I needed to re-dedicate myself each day to change.

I went to my surgeon's office in July 2011 and was down to 351 and surgery approvals would be sent after Aug 11, 2011. So I did all I wanted to do before my surgery and went on Vacation with my family. At the time I was Married to the man of my dreams with two beautiful children, a 11 yr old daughter and 9 yr old son. We spent a week in Pigeon Forge, TN, our favorite vacation spot. We returned home on July 23rd and on July 24th my husband told me he was leaving. He moved out on the 27th. So here we go, I am going through a separation and getting ready for surgery at the same time. Talk about an emotional rollar coaster. However, I was determined that I would be okay no matter what so I stopped focusing on him and started focusing on myself. Having something else to concentrate on was the only thing that got me through the rough part of my separation.

August 11th, the office sent for approvals and my surgery was approved. I started my pre-op diet of protein shake for breakfast and lunch and a Lean Cuisine type meal for dinner. I did this for two weeks. I had a pre-op appointment on Sept 7, 2011 and my weight was 332 lbs. My Banding surgery took place on Sept 15, 2011 and on the day of my surgery I weighed in at 330 lbs.

It is now 5 days post-op and my liquid diet is going fine. I still have a lot of gas from the surgery and I am experiencing some chest congestion and coughing. I go back for my first post-op check-up on Sept 27th. I am enjoying reading posts and staying encouraged. There are some great ideas here and I look forward to being able to share and help encourage everyone as we go through this journey together. I am looking forward to much success.

How much weight you REALLY LOST!!!!!

Some of us (me include) believe scales should be used only for fish or piano ... However, many others like to weight themselves regularly. They feel it helps keep them on track.

Many compare their lost to someone else’s, and get discouraged. The amount of weight lost is affected by many factors. Everyone loses weight at different rates. It has to do with age, gender, one’s weight, exercise, etc.. A 10 pound lost to one person could be as affected as a 40 pound lost to another. Think of it this way: If a 400-pound person loses 40 pounds; a 300-pound person loses 30 pounds, a 200-pound person loses 20 pounds, and a 100-pound person loses 10 pounds – the 400-pound person didn’t necessarily lose more weight than the others. All three lost 10% of their body weight.

With that in mind, I found a very good site that will calculate the PERCENTAGE of weight loss.

It's Fit Watch Weight Loss Percentage

So before you get blue because Person A lost X pounds, and you've lost Y pounds, try to find out where they started from. You may be surprised to see you results are just as good, if not better.

Some other things to ponder:

Sometimes it is not the number of pounds that someone loses in a specified period of time that is important. Remember, if you are toning up muscle – your weight loss may seem to have slowed (or stopped), when in fact you are replacing fat with muscle. Muscle is heavier then fat. Someone weighing 200 pounds with a body fat percentage of 25 is carrying around 50 pounds of extra fat. That same person weighing 200 pounds with 10 percent body fat would be carrying only 20 pounds of fat. So it’s not the number that is important.

Remember there are other “scales” you can use to monitor your success: your constant hunger reduction (eliminated); reduced clothing size; increase energy; re-familiarizing yourself to body-parts unseen for years (errr… toes) ; “common” activity becoming easier (walking, climbing steps), just feeling good about yourself; sleeping better (reduced snoring); the mirror; better medical exam results (lower cholesterol and/or blood pressure); etc.

Finally, we are a generation of instantaneous results, however remember we didn’t put all the weight on at once, it took years. So don’t you think losing it would take just as long? This isn't one of those miracle instantaneous weight loss programs. Those types of programs always fail. This is a way of life. Plus in all my years of losing weight I’ve come too realized with instantaneous weight lost comes instantaneous weight gain.

Nowhere does any of the literature state you will lose x amount of weight in x days. Think LONG TERM. That’s what I am doing. My outlook is “Slow and steady wins the race”. Even if it take me over 5 years to lose all the weight I want to, I know in the long run I will be happy and healthier. My doctor firmly believes the slower you lose weight, the better chance you have of keeping it off. My doctor reminded me that each pound I gained took time to put on, and it’s going to take some time to lose those same pounds. Try to remind yourself that even if I lost only 1 pound per week, in year’s time I’d be 52 pounds lighter.

Be proud of your lost. No matter how small it may seem. Remember, it’s better to lose not a pound than to GAIN a single pound.

My First 10 Days

Today is my 10th day post surgery. Since my surgery I have lost another 7 pounds for a total of 24!!!. There is nothing like success to keep one going.

I had one really bad day - the day after we came home from thew hospital. I had that gas pain everyone talks about, plus it hurt to take deep breaths (I had a hernia in my diaphram repaired at the same time) and I was cold. I am NEVER cold, and the weather was warm, but I was cold. However, the more I used my breathing thingy they gave me at the hospital, the easier my breathing got. As I continued to walk around the house the gas pain subsided, and the following morning the coldness was gone.

I cut back on my pain meds, and have not needed any at all since then. In previous surgeries and in this one, too, I have found that for me, once I am able to manage my pain without Oxycontin my recovery kicks into high gear. I am by no means suggesting anyone stop taking your prescribed pain meds before you are ready. This is just my experience.

Since then it's been all smooth seas and calm winds. I feel better every day, my spirits are high. Friends are already noticing the weight loss, and I can wear cloths that I've had hanging in my closet for two years. What a wonderful feeling!

Just banded 15 Aug--MAJOR GAS PAINS

Hi.
Just found and joined this site--hope I can get some help and relief. I was banded a week ago today, and I am still having major gas pains. I've been back to my surgeon, was given an oxygen test, had more bloodwork done, and was prescribed more Lortab and Valium (5 mg). This pain will not go away, no matter what I do. I think I've had only 4 out of 24 hours of relief.
Things I've tried & had minimal relief (like for aobut 7 minutes):
- Gas-X, Extra Strength (chewables AND strips)
- hot tea (peppermint, chamomille, green)
- Mylicon (for babies)
- hard mints
- walking briskly
- getting on my knees
- heating pad

HOW LONG DOES THIS LAST? WHAT ELSE CAN I TRY/DO???? Help, please!

My surgery is scheduled for tomorrow - Aug. 17, 2011. I am very excited, and just a tad nervous. My pre-surgery diet has resulted in a loss of 15 lbs., and two people, including my husband, have actually noticed. (They might have just been being nice, but I choose to think they are telling the truth!)

Any one else having surgery this month, let's support each other. I am really pumped right now, but I know there will be times when I will need the help of someone else who knows what I am going through.

I have a friend who had this surgery just a year ago. He says he has never been hungry and has had no problems. I hope I am the same, but I know that no two people have the same reaction. The past three weeks, struggling with the pre-surgery diet have been pretty tough, but I have noticed that in the past few days I have not been as hungry, nor have I been hungry as soon after eating. Maybe my brain has finally "realize"d that I am serious about this.

Best of luck to all of you, and let me know how your journeys are going.

Surgery set for Aug. 17, 2011

Hi everyone,

I love that there is a forum now for Realize Bandsters. I am getting mine in a week and a half, at the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC.) My surgeon is Dr. Khandelwal.

A couple of years ago I started investigating banding. I picked the UWMC program because it is a really good program, the doctors are top notch, and they take my insurance. I met with the surgeon in April, jumped through the required hoops, and am now excited and a bit nervous with surgery only 1 1/2 weeks away.

My pre-op diet is three weeks of about 1000 C per day. It can be either three protien drinks and one frozen meal, or "real food". There was an option to mix the two, so at this point I am doing a breakfast protien drink, a salad with chicken for lunch, a yogurt mid-afternoon, and a Lean Cuisine type dinner (under 350 c.) So far I have lost about 7 or 8 pounds, so it is working.

A bit about me - I am 67 years old, married, have 2 grown kids, 2 grown step-kids, and 6 grandchildren between them. My husband and I live in NW Washington (Oak Harbor, Whidbey Island,) and enjoy cruising in our 43' trowler here, in the Canadian Gulf Islands, and once every few years on up into Alaska.

Best of luck to everyone on our weight loss journeys!

Realize band Slippage?

Hello everyone,
I have a question about Realize band slippage. I was banded March 10 2011. I have a 7cc band with 4 fills and have almost 4.5 cc in. The doctor asks me every month if I have the feeling of being full. And well I don't. I had a lot of vomiting the first 2 weeks post- op. and a high fever post op day 3. I have lost a total of 30 pounds so far, but the weight loss is very slow going this last month. I have a lot of discomfort at the port site and when I eat 8 out of 10 times what I am eating gets stuck. I can feel it right below the breast line. Any input is welcome.

Bandster - Day 3

Greetings. I'm new here and hope that this site will become a second home. It's only been 3 days since my surgery. Despite all the research and patient education classes, I'm still nervous. Doing something wrong and damaging the band/stomach at this point would break my heart.

Since coming home, I've been trying to figure out what 'full' feels like. I know it's somewhat different for everyone. It's only been a few days so I'm still on liquids but even at that rate I feel the same as when I have acid reflux. How do I figure out what is 'full' versus "acid reflux" versus 'I've done something wrong here." Also, I'm having a terrible problem with swallowing air. It seems that I've never learned in my life how to drink without swallowing air. I'm trying to learn new habits and be careful but there are still horrible pains when an air bubble comes back up after drinking. Is that normal for new bandsters? Is it just a matter of burping and there's no damage to the pouch or anything?

If anyone might have reassurance or advice to offer, I'd appreciate it! Thank you!

Concerned with pain/gas

Hi Everyone! Need a little advise/help with a weird pain I'm having in my stomach. I was banded a little over 1 month ago and was doing pretty well until I had a scary incident with a mango getting "stuck" in my pouch. My MD said to wait 24 hrs and if it didn't "go through" I had to come in the office and he was "going to have to go after it" - yicks! Well, with help from this website, I learned that sipping pineapple juice may help and thank goodness it did. But......since then, I've not felt well and it seems to be getting worse. It feels like extreme tightness or possibly trapped gas right over my port and up into my esophagus. I don't have any appetite and have to force drinking and eating (soft diet and protein shakes). When I can belch or pass gas (sorry to be so blunt), I feel some relief. I did start my menstral cycle for some reason after not having it for over 6 months so I'm hoping it may be it's just built up gas. Has anyone experienced anything like this??? I'm so nervous about it - thanks for any help. I have a MD appointment in 1 1/2 weeks and would like to wait it out until then to see if it passes. It's been going on for about a week and today has really been bad. I've been trying to stretch and that seems to help a bit too. Please help. Thanks again!

Weight Loss Surgery is like driving a Car.

The other day a coworker was talking how his daughter just got her driving permit. He said he took her out to the store, and once done said “now drive home” (which was two miles). She was in a panic and didn’t think she could do it. She DID do it, and without incident.

Yesterday in a support meeting a “newbie” to the bariatric world was there and had a lot of concerns about “being successful”, and how one ever lives ‘normally’. You can tell she was both excited and nervous in her new lifestyle.

This morning on the way into work, I saw a minor accident. For some unknown reason that occurrence made me think of my friend’s daughter and the newbie’s concerns, and I thought of a new analogy (if you know me, I love analogies).

Let me try to compare the two.

One of the very first steps many of do is refer to a “driver’s manual” before we venture to do either one. We read books, on-line websites, web-pages to try to figure out the rules and regulations of the “road” (to success).

The next step many do prior to getting our license (having the operation) is to do some “test-driving”. We practice what we’ve read. Some of us think it’s a breeze, while others have difficulty with some aspects (remember K-turn parking anyone??). However this is the best time to learn what we may need to work on prior to getting our “license”.

Then we go and get our license (have the operation). When many first have the surgery, they are a lot like my friend’s daughter. They are scared and worried if they will ever be able to master this. We try to remember to follow all the rules we’ve been taught, and give special attention to those “problematic” matters.

After a while, we begin to feel “comfortable” in our abilities, and we may begin to become a little less stringent in following the rules. Example, when driving how many of us still adheres to the 9 to 3 (10 to 2) rule? If you’re anything like me, you probably have one hand on the wheel, while the other is resting on the window. Similarly, how many of us chew our food 30 times before swallowing, or wait 30-60 seconds before we swallow another piece of food?

Then comes the time when we get too over confident we know what we’re doing, and we disregard most of the rules we’ve been taught. We continue down the road, many times no obeying the "law of the road". We beleive we're in control, and know how to handle what we're doing.

If we remain in this state, eventually we will get into an “accident” (weight gain). Sometime is may be just a fender bender (a few pounds), sometimes it could be minor accident (10 to 20 percent of total weight loss), other times it’s a major accident (25 to 50 percent of total weight loss), and unfortunately there are those times when the accident is serious (over 50 percent of total weight loss). Now what do we do?!?!?!?!?!?

We need to contact our insurance man (the Bariatric Doctor/Nutritionists) to evaluate the cause of the accident. Sometimes the accident was no fault of ourselves, but a defect in the “vehicle” (device/operation choice). If that is determined, then our insurance person can make the determination to “totaling the vehicle”, and then recommendation of either the same vehicle, similar vehicle or entirely new vehicle.

If the accident has been determined to be the fault of ourselves, then we’ll probably need to inspect the “policy” to see what is expected from us. We know we’ll have to pay some sort of ‘deductible’ (admit our fault), and ask the insurance person what we need to do, then proceed from there. Hopefully once we’re “behind the wheel” we’ll pay closer attention those “basic rules of the road”.

So today while you're driving down that "road to success", stop and realize what type of driver you've become. Are you the one who is obeying the rules, or one who knows what they are doing?

Trouble loosing after being banded 2 years!

I joined today because I am utterly disappointed. My surgery date was July 10, 2008. After surgery, the weight was falling off. I immediately dropped 20lbs. However, that exciting downhill journey ended so soon.
It wasn't until October 2010 that my band was finally filled to a point that I would reach my feeling of fullness quickly and since my last fill the scale has not gone down. Although my dress size has not increased, the scale varies on a regular basis. I am trying to make sure that I don't get discouraged and revert back to my old eating habits, but it is so hard to remain positive when I can see the numbers on the scale slowly creep towards my pre-surgery weight. Is there anyone else who has had problems loosing weight and overcome the hurdle? Please help!

I'm newly banded. I had a very rough start for the first 7 days and then WOW - started feeling great and was up and going strong. Lost 14 pounds since surgery. Right now I can eat almost anything and have not had first fill.
I am feeling a little insecure because I am starting to feel hungry between meals and am scared I will stray into old eating habits. I don't know what to expect after the first fill...actually am dreading the feeling of being full and sick on a sip of water as I was right after surgery.
Can anyone give me a description of what it feels like after a first fill - the restriction. At this time I am no longer feeling restriction as I did the first 7-10 days post surgery.

Hi, First posting for me as I am 1 week post-op tomorrow (June 17). Still on week one of two weeks of liquid diet - Protein. Thought I was doing pretty good until today. I feel so down and out both mentally and physically. Hope this is normal but not sure. I am usually a very happy go lucky person. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this (I'm even wondering if I made the right choice with surgery). Thanks for any advise or encouragement.

need help

I have been banded since July 2009. My highest weight was 266 lbs. and after becoming diabetic, I lost down to 244. On surgery day I weighted 244. I had lost down to 175 lbs. in approx. 7 months. I could not get over the energy increase and being able to move better and no more diabeties or acid reflux. I lost my mother April 20010 and began to pick up my bad behaviors from emotional eating and have gained approx. 20 lbs. back. I am so disappointed with myself. I have developed something that the doctors feel is being caused from my lapband and I would like to ask if anyone has experienced these symntoms. I have stated becoming very nauseated, very weak, then my heart begans to pound very hard. I have been to the emergency room twic once being admitted. They did an endoscopy and found that my band is to contricted and said it my have to come out. I have been very careful what I eat, but really I do not have an appetite. I have lost approx. 7 lbs in the last week and a half. I am very concerned about having my band out. I has been a life a saver for me. Can anyone help?

Waiting for the journey to begin

Greetings to all. My introduction is rather simple. I'm a wife and mother of 4 kids. We're a farm family so I enjoy gardening and the usual farm chores. I suffer from fibromyalgia which makes physical activity somewhat difficult. Other than that, there's not much else to say except that I'm overweight and look forward to being healthy again. I look forward to learning more about the personal experiences many of you have gone through since your surgery.

I hope to have my banding surgery done somewhere in mid-to late July if all goes well. My surgeon requires a couple pre-surgery evaluations that we're finishing up next week. The insurance and financial parts are all worked out already so I'm hoping everything will culminate in a mid-July surgery.

At this point, I've got a billion and a half questions. I want to know more about the day-to-day experiences...those questions that would be trivial unless they're a part of your daily life. As I read posts here I'm sure many of those questions will be answered through the experiences shared.

One particular question I was hoping someone could answer is in regards to travel after banding. I travel to developing countries at times. I'm afraid that during those travels I will have less ability to control my food intake and schedule. I'll often be in a hilltribe village where the only water we can drink is the water we haul in and food options are limited to what is eaten in the village. Does anyone have experience with situations like this? If so, could you share advice? Of course, there's also camping as well. While not as dramatic as overseas travel, it does present a few challenges. Does anyone have camping advice to share?

Another question regards....what to call it.....hmmmm......I guess 'hard labor'. We live on a farm and when there's work to be done, it has to be done now. I'm accustomed to working hard for hours at a time with no breaks or downtime. I don't stop to eat or anything else till the job is finished. (The reason for this is that, due to the fibromyalgia, once I slow down or stop for a bit my body is going to majorly revolt.) The idea of adjusting my work habits is just mind boggling. If anyone else here either farms or works in something like construction I'd love to hear how you're managing since the banding.

Well, that's about it for me right now. I'll go read some of the other posts here and get to know ya'll.

energy level low

I am 4 days post-op and my pain is nearly gone. Yeah for that! My issue is that I have low energy and I am hungry. I am still on the liquid diet and also taking two unjury shakes a day. According to my food and liquid diary, I should be getting enough portien and fluids. Why am I still hungry? Why don't I feel satisfied after the protein shake? Is this the adjustment part and the hunger is in my head? A little yogurt (2 oz) holds me for a while, but that is pushing the liquid into a soft diet. My MD wanted me on liquids for 7 days post-op. I really want to feel better and the walking, fluids, and shakes don't seem to be enough. Any Ideas?

Greetings from Arizona

Hi everybody! At 65 and 5'2", I weighed in at 272 when I finally went for my first consultation at Banner Bariatric in Gilbert, Arizona. I had gone to an orientation session with the Chief Surgeon, Dr. Schuster, at this Center of Excellence, but he made it clear that he did not work with anyone over 65 but one of the surgeons in the group, Dr. Podakomeni was willing to do so.

I started to complete the paperwork and met with my PCP in order to get the referrral. He tried to talk me out of it by quoting some grossly exagerrated stats for fatalities while at the same time pitching Optifast which he sells. Anyway, I did walk away with the referral. He could hardly say no since he has been treating me for diabetes (oral meds only) and high blood pressure.

February, 2011, I had the intake with the nurse specialist, the nutritionist and Dr. P. He felt that the sleeve gastrectomy was the preferred surgery, but Medicare does not cover it. Because I have a short torso, I am not a candidate for the lap RNY and scar tissue/age make an open RNY out of the question. So, I came to the band by default, but I am starting to feel at peace with this procedure.

I have had my psych consultation and I have attended three support group sessions. I am very impressed with the professionalism of the support staff. They are going to be an essential part of my journey

The one monkey-wrench in the whole process is the fact that Dr. P. is leaving the practice and moving to NJ. He thinks Dr. Shuster will take my case, even though I am in that "old age" zone of 65. If he does not, I am concerned that I will be back to step one, waiting until they get another doctor on staff.

Anyway, that is my story so far. I am really looking forward to learning from all of you and your experiences.

Picky Eater with Food Allergies...Needs Help for Food Ideas!

Hi Everyone, I'm 6 days post surgery and I need some help. I am a picky eater and on top of that I have to major food allergies, soy and peanuts! It is very difficult for me to find foods on my liquid diet and soon to come on the pureed diet. Any suggestions on what I can do? I love soup, but unfortunately a lot of it needs to be home made because of my allergies :-( I'm not opposed to cooking, but I have a family so my time spent in the kitchen is minimal because of activities, school, etc. I'm not a veggie fan, but love zucchini. My typical diet pre-surgery was meat and potatoes! If you need more info to help me with ideas, just let me know.

Thanks for the help!

Bariatric Advantage!

I get my Meal Replacement protein drinks from Bariatric Advantage in Irvine, CA. The store is open until 4:30 and they offer tastings. They also have an online store with all of the items and will send samples of the protein drinks if you chat with a rep or call in and ask.

My favorite flavor is the chocolate. Vanilla is also good. The strawberry is too sweet and artificially tasting to me. I haven't tried the banana yet. I'm thinking of getting a sample of the unflavored and adding it to a fresh fruit smoothie. I'll let everyone know how that goes once I try it.

The shakes are made from 100% whey protein isolate, have 160 calories and 27g of protein, plus lots of great vitamins and minerals in an 8 oz. serving (if you want it thinner, you can add more water). I shake the powder with ice cold water in a small size blender bottle and put it in my purse to enjoy on my way to work. If I'm in the mood for something like hot chocolate I'll warm up some water and drink the chocolate flavored protein drink warm. Be careful though because once I made it with super hot water and there were little chunks floating around. No good!

I don't like them made in the blender or magic bullet because they get too airy and thicken up too much. Of course if you add ice, I'm sure you're going to be tricked into thinking you're drinking a fatty milkshake!

Ok I've said enough. By the way, I'm a schoolteacher and Bariatric Advantage doesn't pay me a cent or give me discounts to talk about their products, but I love them! I get all my vitamins and supplements there, too.

Roasted Butternut Squash soup

I was hoping to see more recipes on here! C'mon people! Here's my recipe for Roasted Butternut squash soup. Serves 4-6

Ingredients:
1 large butternut squash (2-2.5lb)
2 medium onions
2 green tomatillos
2 green anaheim chili peppers
3 cloves of garlic
2 medium granny smith apples
4-6 cups of chicken or vegetable stock
4 shakes of hot sauce (optional)

Steps

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Peel and cube squash. Peel and quarter onions. Peel and quarter tomatillos. Cut off edge off stem of peppers, slice down the middle and remove seeds and ribs. Peel garlic. Core, peel and slice apples.

Place all prepped ingredients in a large bowl and toss with 2-3 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper to taste (I use two pinches of kosher salt and 4 grinds of the peppermill).

Pour veggies onto a 1/2 sheet tray and roast for 40 minutes, tossing around every 10-15 minutes.

Remove veggies from oven and cool. Then puree 1/3 of the veggies with 1-2 cups of chicken (or veggie) stock in your food processor. Puree to desired consistency. Move contents to a medium saucepan. Repeat until done. If you want your soup thinner, puree veggies until silken and then add more stock to the pot.

Serve warm with a shake of your favorite hot sauce.

Enjoy!

Second week banded!

Before my doctor recommended WLS I was 5'2 and weighed 270lbs. That was my heaviest weight. Over six months I worked to lose 30 lbs, but then would gain and lose, never really winning the battle. When I finally decided to go through with it, I was approved rather quickly because I had high blood pressure and was pre-diabetic and have arthritis in my left hip.
I had my realize band installed on March 23rd. Although I initially thought I'd be able to go back to work right away, I'm still home and making the transition from a protein-based liquid diet to a smooth/pureed foods diet! Yippee! Since my preop diet began on March 8th I have gone from 247lbs down to 231lbs. The weight is coming off steadily, but of course I haven't eaten any "real" food in weeks.
I was excited to get up and moving as soon as I came home form the hospital. BIG MISTAKE! I walked one mile two days after the surgery and then upped it to two miles the next day! I wasn't ready and ended up with severe pain. I was in my bed, in pain and scared for three more days before I started my walks again. Part of the reason I wanted to start moving right away is because I am still afraid it might not work for me. I realize that it's going to work, but I need to move slowly until I am all healed before I can get back to my usual exercise.
Yesterday I walked the two miles after walking one mile for a few days. I was pretty active before the surgery and now I can't be. Although its a little frustrating, I know that once everything heals and I am back to my old self, I won't have any problems losing weight. Before surgery I used to do Zumba at least 3 days a week and elliptical or treadmill along with it but I would eat too much or starve and so I never lost weight. I'll eventually get back to a place where I can be more active and I'll be losing weight as well.
I'm scheduled to go back to work on Wednesday. Now that I can move around more, I am enjoying making my own soups rather than eating broth and pre-made soups from Trader Joe's. I made a fabulous soup yesterday that would work for liquid or smooth foods depending on how much broth one uses. I'll post a recipe later once I write it out. I hope everyone is having a great journey!

Rules to be successful

Over the years I have collected some common “rules” one should follow in order to be successful. So far I am up to close to 25 “universal set of laws” one should heed during their journey.

I would love to see this list grow, so please feel free to add to it. Maybe one day this will be adopted as the Constitution of Gastric Success!!

(1) Get your daily Protein requirements in (60 – 80 grams – your Doctor/Nutritionist may have different target amount – so follow their recommendation). Protein requirements change over time (depending upon weight loss stage, amount of exercise, hospitalization, etc). Check with your Doctor/Nutritionist concerning your protein needs.

(2) Protein drinks should be: between 20 and 30 grams of protein per serving (25 is recommended), contain less than 150 calories (110 recommended) contain less than 10 grams of carbohydrates (5 is recommended) (your Doctor/Nutritionist may have different rules – so follow their recommendation).

(3) Remember eat: Protein first, then fiber (ex veggies/fruits) then (if there is room) good (NON-starchy) carbohydrates.

(4) Drink at least 64 ounces of non-carbonated/non-caffeinated liquid.

(5) No drinking while eating and/or 30 minutes before and/or after meals (your Doctor/Nutritionist may have different rules – so follow their recommendation)

(6) You must east to lose weight!! Yes I know this a strange concept but if you don’t, your body will go into “starvation mode” and “store all it can”.

(7) Each meal should take at least 25 to 30 minutes to complete. Studies show it takes this long for your stomach to tell your brain it’s full – no matter how much food is in it.

(8) Eat at the same time everyday

(9) Eat until you are full, not stuffed

(10) Wait 30 to 60 seconds between putting another piece food in your mouth

(11) Make sure foods (especially meats) are moist

(12) Before you put that piece in your mouth, ask yourself “Would I give this size to a baby?”

(14) Take your vitamins !!

(15) Remember, during the operation they put the tool around your stomach, and not your brain. So, you will need to do some self control.

(16) Exercise – begin slow (example walk; climbing a flight of stairs; park in the furthest spot in the lot) and then gradually increase. My suggestion do two days; rest a day; do two days; rest a day; do two days

(17) If you feel like “snacking” do something else (ex. Go outside; call a (WLS) friend; come to the board and post, etc)

(18) Participate in a support group!!! It is a fact that those who attend supports groups have increased weight loss long term!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(19) ok .. a little gross and try to figure out what I am saying .. What you think may be a “GAS” may come out as a “Liquid” or “Solid” .. so BE CAREFUL and BE PREPARED !!

(20) Remember to speak to your Doctor/Nutritionist regularly.

(21) Speak to your Psychiatrist/Psychologist at least twice a year, especially when the “honeymoon” stage is over.

(22) Keep your surgeon appointments.

(23) At specified intervals, get your blood-work done. Check with your Doctor.

(24) Know I am always here for you

Cycling

I had my surgery on May 27, 2009. At weigh in prior to surgery I was 303. Last week I visited my endocrinologist and found that I am now down to 254.

Last year I took up cycling to help with the weight loss. I ended up doing a 54 mile ride in late October of 2010.

Now, with a new road bike, I am gearing up for a 50 mile ride in May and a 65 mile ride in June. I am now losing inches, even around the waist.

All this may sound like success, but as a type 2 diabetic, I am dealing with proper nutrition on these long rides. After about 25 miles the body runs out of glucose reserves. I have to take glucose supplements to keep my blood sugars from cratering and to keep my energy level up. The group that did the surgery lectures all new people about avoiding sugar products of any kind, but without gels or powerbars I get hypoglycemic. I have been working with a dietitian and breaking several rules set out by the office, including protein shakes on the days I do 30 plus miles and gels.

I will be going in for an adjustment next month and would appreciate any advice from others who are dealing the demands of endurance exercise.

My New Life

Well, today is the first day of the rest of my life. A cliche I know but it describes how I feel. Last week I had my first appointment with my Bariatriac Surgeon and began the road to my new life. I read in the news that the FDA had made some changes to their restrictions on the Realize bands so I started my research. I guess I am one of the lucky ones because my insurance will cover a majority of the surgery, the out of pocket costs are somewhat minimal so I decided to go for it!
So just a little about myself:
I am 37 years old and have been overweight for more than half my life; I am 4'11" and am currently 209 lbs. I was a very active child and really didn't have any weight or exercise concerns until after high school. I have yo-yo'd just like I am sure most people here have. I have tried almost every diet there is including Fen Phen, Sensa, Physicians Weight loss, and Weight Watchers; all to just put it right back on again. So here I am.
I don't have a surgery date yet but it is estimated about the end of July 2011. My insurance requires a 90 day physicians weight loss period before they will approve so that puts me in July. I am keeping my fingers crossed and am sooooo excied to start this journey.
I live in Jacksonville Florida and my Surgeon is Michael Baptista and he is affiliated with Memorial Health; he offers a informational session that provides tons of information and they help with all the insurance paperwork.
I will be coming back regularly to update my progress and to make good use of the information on this forum.

NJ Tuesday – APRIL 5: Next Inconvenient get together dinner!!

REASON: A few of you have mentioned you’d like to get together for a dinner. We can sit around, meet each other, share our trials and tribulations and maybe a few laughs. While we want to help each other lose, maybe we can also help each other gain … a new friend or two (or 5).

EVERYONE is invited to come. It doesn’t matter which operation you had, or even if you haven’t had a procedure yet, or maybe you’re just “thinking” about it !! COME and have a good time !!

If your apprehensive in attending, let me assure you – you will have a good time. There is NO JUDGING !! We are tolerant of each other’s decisions. In addition, if it means anything, the Food Police are banned from our gathering.

Each time we do this, I will try to “move” the location - since no one location will be convenient for everyone.

This time we’re in the “Northern-Central” section of the Garden State !!

Place: The West 22 Diner

Location: Route 22 West, Springfield NJ

Time: 5:30 p.m. it is understandable that not everyone can arrive at this time, so come WHENEVER. We probably won’t order until 6:30 p.m.

Menu / Website: http://www.thewest22diner.com/

In the meantime, for the “meeting newbies” here are some meeting request. I hope I don't offend anyone - it's not meant to be that. Just helpful.

(1) If you want a separate check, please let the server know prior to taking the orders. It’s a hassle to ask the server to do this later on. And some places won’t do this if the crowd is too numerous.

(2) Usually when we do a group meeting, I like to divide check by the total number of folks at the table, instead of trying to figure out who had what. (If someone brings more than one person, they multiple the total owed by the number of people they have). Now I understand if you only order a coffee and someone else has a Filet Mignon with a 5 lbs Lobster – then we can address that more diplomatically.

(3) Please bring CASH (unless you want a separate check). And please make sure you have an assortment of bills. It’s really difficult to make change when everyone brings only 20’s.

(4) Bring a CAMERA!! Even if you are like me and camera shy, you’ll still want to take some photos of the folks who are there. I don’t have one or I would.

(5) Bring “proof” of your former self. Nothing says “how far you have come” like older photos. Even if you lost only 1 pound, bring your “before” pictures (and at the last meeting we all agree we hate that word only. Be proud of any amount of weight you lost).

Remember this is a GROUP effort. Please feel free to add your suggestion and/or voice your opinion on any suggestion. AND NO HARD FEELING – this is meant to be a pleasant experience

For those who haven’t had the operation yet – you too are more the welcome to come. In fact, you are encouraged to come!! This would be a ‘true-life’ learning experience to see “life after the operation”. You will be able to hear what our ups-and-downs are, and you are encouraged to ask as many questions as you want. Other “up-comers” have come, and found it interesting and educational.

Significant others and/or kids are also welcomed (however you may want to leave them behind so you can really enjoy yourself – it’s up to you)

Finally, please feel free to tell ANYONE you think may be interested, and since I cannot post on every board in the cyberworld, feel free to copy and paste this on the boards you frequent.

I AM OVERWEIGHT!!!

Which may seem like a strange post, but for someone who over 3 years ago was considered Super Morbidly Obese (which sounds like a Marvel Superhero) I am proud to declare I am now OVERWEIGHT!!!

I weighed myself today, and I am down to 228. OMFG!! I think the last time I seen that was .. hmmmm .. birth ?!?!?!?

To think that I started at 435 pounds, and now I am 8 pounds away my self-imposed goal of 220 is mind-boggling. Also thinking that all last year I “knew what I was doing” was actually doing a disservice to me. This January I decided to become refocused, get back to basics, up my exercise, and try to make 220 by the end of the year. I have a feeling I may do it – with God’s help (of course).

I need to thank EVERYONE who has been with me on this journey, and has given me love, support, advice and that greatly needed swift kick in my (_______x_______). I know I couldn’t have done it without you all!!

Banded 2/17 & so excited for this journey

My journey started in July 2010 when I attended an information seminar with Dr. Blackstone at Scottsdale Health Care. I knew I would go there because it is by my house and is a great facility. But, I was even more impressed after I learned more about her.

After filling out paperwork and getting some medical records sent over, I had my first meeting with her office in September. Met with a nutritionist, psychologist and physicians assistant to determine if I was a candidate. All were super nice, but I was a little annoyed with the PA because she tried to convince me to have gastric bypass instead. Said it was more effective, which made me feel like they just want to make sure they can show good results with their patients? My Dad had lap band 4 years ago and has been successful, so she did not change my mind. But, overall, that was the only negative and the positives far outweighed that negative so I stuck with that practice.

I still had some physician records to get because my BMI was not quite 40 and thru had to establish co-morbidities. This whole process took a while and I never really heard from them. When I called to check on the status, it turns out my other doctors still had not submitted some of the needed records. The pre-authorization person also told me she would submit but was doubtful it would be covered by insurance. That threw me into a funk so I turned to candy and fattening holiday food. I think I was subconsciously trying to increase my BMI to 40 so I would qualify. So stupid on my part!

My doctors finally got all my paperwork in and the office submitted it. I wasn't aware this was still going on so I was overjoyed when I got the call in late November that my surgery had been approved. With Dr. blackstone's patient log, the holidays and my job, Feb. 16 was the earliest date.

I would like to say I got with the program and started trying to lose the 10 lbs required before surgery, but that didn't happen until the end of January.....one week before my pre-op appointment. Every day was "this is my last regular soda", or "my last chocolate", or "my last..fill in the blank with whatever bad food". One week before my pre-op appointment and three weeks before surgery, I finally got my butt in gear because I was scared if I did not lose 10 lbs they would cancel the surgery. Only problem was that I now weighed 7 lbs more than my initial weigh in with the office. I was able to lose 9 lbs in one week but it was horrible. I would encourage anyone reading this who is preparing for surgery to really follow the physicians request and smartly cut back to lose weight and exercise. More on exercise later....

I had my pre- op appointment on Feb. 3 and everyone in the office was great. I had been moved from an authorization person as my contact to a pre-op point of contact and she is amazing! At the appointment, I had to take a quiz on lap-band surgery to confirm I understood the procedure, was weighed and then met with Dr. blackstone. She was very nice and I felt confident with her. I also formally chose the Realize band, after she explained the "recall" on the bands and that it was not an issue anymore. I chose Realize because of the lower port and website. She was Sweden on the choice, which is good I guess.

Next up was my pre-op education session on Feb. 9. It was a 7 hour class where we had speakers on respiratory, relaxation, psychology, nutrition and exercise. They also served us a "normal" meal 2 months post- op for bands, 4 months for sleeves and 6 months for bypass. It was a good class all in all but only three band people in there, one sleeve and about 10 bypass. Made me question my decision for a minute? Main thing they hammered home was that a band is one tool to help you lose weight, but you still had to work hard at it. I knew this from my Dad, but liked that they reminded everyone so people do not think this is the easy way. It also helped me because I have not told many people at work because I feared they would think I took the easy way out. On a funny side note, I ran into someone from work thar day who was there for her husband who was having bypass. She confided that lots of people at work have had bands also, but didn't give names. Darn! But at least I know my secret is safe with her until I decide to tell people.

Ok, so now onto the actual surgery. My doc does not require liquids only for weeks pre-op, so I was lucky there. I had light meals for the two days before and then liquids only for the day before surgery. I also had to take magnesium citrate starting at 1 pm the day before. The office called at 2 pm to tell me my surgery had been moved from 10am to 3pm. Not great because I was starving, but I was so excited for surgery that I put on a happy face......until they called at 5 pm to tell me surgery had to be moved from Wed to Thursday. Not happy at all, so I showed them. I went out an had a cheeseburger, fries and regular soda. So dumb, but definitely shows I am an emotional eater. I will say, that meal felt like I had gotten a stay of execution though:) until I had to redo liquids only the next day and the magnesium.

On surgery day, I got there at 10am for a 12pm surgery....that was then moved to 1pm. I kept telling myself it was ok and to keep my eye on the prize. I finally went into pre-op at 12:30pm, was weighed, put on a fancy gown & socks (kidding!) and had to take a pregnancy test, which is standard unless the patient is 55+. It all flew from there....got a heparin shot in my stomach ( that really hurt), an IV (which didn't), had a bag or two of fluids pumped in me, and met with Dr. davis, who was assisting dr. Blackstone, dr. Blackstone & the anesthesiologist. I also learned that dr. Blackstone got stuck in a complicated 6 hour surgery on Tuesday for a revision, that pushed Tuesday patients to wednesday and Wednesday to Thursday. But, the revision patient was good & went home on Thursday. See why I had confidence in her?

So the anesthesiologist put something in my IV and started wheeling me back to the OR around 2:15 pm. All I remember was the hall on the way to the OR, hearing someone say she is already out, me saying I am just resting my eyes....and then I woke up in recovery around 3:45. Don't remember a thing!

My left side was in pain but mainly I was so thirsty! I got a few ice chips, which were heaven, and was taken to my room around 5:30pm. Had more ice chips, pain medicine and was told I would get up to walk at 9pm. I was feeling fine and had to pee at 7pm so I asked to get up. Big mistake! It was hard getting out of bed. Once I was up, it was ok though. I also started sips of water about that time. Got up again at 9pm and took my first real walk around the unit at 9pm and again at 11pm. They then let me go to sleep for the night around 11:30pm after my pain meeds. Was up every two hours for vitals and a bathroom break, which I think was good so I was still moving every couple of hours. Only had pain over a 5 at 3:30am but the meeds took care of it right away. Was woken up at 6am for a walk and weigh-in. Felt pretty good, just sore. The worst pain was in my right shoulder...gas pain. But, a heating pad took care of it. I definitely got a better nights sleep than my hubby who slept on a cushioned bench in the room. But at least they had that to sleep on & not just a chair! He was use to it because we had both of our kids at she a.

When I first walked out of my room at 6am, it was like the night of the living dead. A bunch of us were wondering around with our IV poles getting our walk.....except one guy who was speed demon walking around. I knew from my pre-op education class that he had the sleeve, so I just figured he was on day 2 of post-op. Nope, he had his surgery right before mine. He said he felt good because he had been walking 5-6 miles per day pre- op. Guess that exercise thing really is good!

I had chicken broth, caffeine free hot tea and jello around 8am. Everything went ok. They then switched me to an oral pain med and the incisions really started to hurt. I was discharged around 11am, given a prescription for liquid pains med a and went home. I was really sleepy all day and taking 2 tbsp of pain meeds every 4 hours but the pain was still there. Not horrible if I was still but moving was hard - more so than what I remember after my c-sections.

I am on a post-op clear liquid diet (chicken, turkey or veg broth, jello, caffeine free tea and Isopure) until my post-op education class and "first meal" during the glass tomorrow. It will have been four days. I was not hungry until yesterday. I think part of my desire to eat "real" food is that I think I am in ketosis and my mouth tastes horrible! Everyday my pain gets less; I am now down to 1 tbsp every 6 hours. I have been walking around my house lots and went out for short shopping trips sat, sun & today. My shoulder pain went away on Saturday, so that was a relief.

I am now very ready for the next phase in my journey.....soft food! My first fill is March 16 and am mentally preparing for bandster hell before thar fill.

My success (so far) with the Realize Band.

Someone who is deciding about the band may be scare off by reading some people unfortunate experiences/results on different sites. I would like to give a different view.

I do acknowledge, there are folks who get the band, and it does not work for various reasons. The truth is, the band is not for everyone. However not everyone who is a band patient has bad experiences and/or results. There are many of us who are successful, and/or satisfied with their results and/or decision.

My History:

In the summer of 2007, after years of failed diets and ever-increasing weight, my family Doctor said that I really should think about doing something surgically. She stated I was young and healthy enough to do it NOW, but who knows what the next year, or two, may bring. She also stated if I didn’t do something, there was no guarantee I would be around for the next 3 years. That’s when I decided to seriously consider weight loss surgery.

For about 4 years prior, I casually looked into Weight Loss Surgery. I was under the common misconception doing this would be the “easy way out” (boy was I wrong). I also felt that choosing Weight Loss Surgery would be a last resort. With the possibility of DEATH being a reality, it finally WAS.

After vigorously on-line researching, and attending various seminars and speaking to people who had different operations, I met with Doctor Alexander Abkin to discuss my choice and goals. I told him that I wanted a band operation, and my ultimate weight goal would be 220 pounds. Doctor Abkin told me, while it is possible to obtain my goal, I would need to understand that doing it with the band would require a lot of work and determination. In order to be successful I would need to diligent; follow the guidelines set up by the Doctors and Nutritionists, and DO what was expected FROM ME. The band would help, but it would be up to me to watch what I ate. I needed to be accountable for what I put in my mouth. I also had to be committed to do exercises. At the end of the day, it’s still calories in/calories out.

So just over 3 years ago, a 435-pound man was wheeled into an operating room to have his life altering procedure. In the extremely capable hands of Doctor Abkin, the Realize band operation took approximately 45 minutes. Who would have known the old Tom Casola would have died on the table, and a new Tom Casola would be born.

In the beginning, my weight loss was called remarkable. On my two week review I lost 17 pounds. On my one-month review, I lost an additional 30 pounds, for a total of 47 pounds. On my three-month review, I lost an additional 28 pounds. On May 21, I lost another 5+ pound. On the July 11 weigh-in, I lost a total of 100 pounds. On February 28 (2009 – one year – one month), I lost a total of 150 pounds. On November 13 (2009) I was 250 pounds, which made my total weight lost is 185 pounds. On January 29, 2010 (my 2 year BAND-iversary) I was down another 5 pounds for a grand total of 190 pounds. I was 245 pounds, and I was elated.

CURRENTLY:

For the entire 2010 year, I fluctuated between 245 and 250 pounds, and could never get below the 245-pound mark. While I was happy that I was no longer 435 pounds, I was somewhat sadden that I couldn’t lose any more weight, nor was I closer to my ultimate 220 goal. Then between Thanksgiving and New Year I gained weight. I am unsure how much, but my “once baggy” pants were now “tight” and I had slight difficulty buttoning them. I did a personal review how I behaved during the past year, and did a personal inventory what I was doing in regards to eating and exercising. That is when I realized I needed to stop what I was doing; become refocused and accountable, and go back to the BASICS. I needed to do what made me successful. Therefore, on January 3rd 2011, I made a vow to not only go back to the Basics, but to do everything I could to make 2011 the year I get to, at least, 232 pounds. The reason I chose 232 as a new immediate goal is because my BMI moves from OBESE to OVERWEIGHT!! Most people would find it strange anyone would want to be labeled OVERWEIGHT, but when you’re first label was SUPER-MORBIDLY OBESE – Overweight is a great label to achieve.

I pretended I just had the operation and did the “liquid” phase for two weeks. Then I moved onto the “soft food” stage for two weeks. On Jan 28, 2011 (one day prior to my 3 year Bandiversary) I was down to 240 3/4 pounds. I was beside myself. Not only did I lose any weight I gained, but I was below the 245 barrier, and I was almost at the 230’s doorstep. I was even more determined that I would be 232 by the end of 2011. On Thursday February 3rd, I weighed myself again (I usually weigh myself once a month, but did it since I thought the 240 reading had to be wrong) and the scale read 238 on the button. I was walking on air!! I was officially in the 230’s. I was 3 pounds away from losing 200 pounds, and 6 pounds shy of my current immediate 232 goal. In addition, now the 220 ultimate goal doesn’t seem so far out of reach. As of February 15th, I am 234 1/2 pounds. I have lost just over 200 pound in about 3 years. And only 2 more pounds until I am overweight!!

MY VIEWPOINT

I am not going to lie, it’s not easy. Every day I need to work at this. Everyday I wake up in fear, thinking this is the day “the other shoe will drop”, and I will start regaining. Some would think this is a terrible feeling, but I don’t. I take this feeling and embrace it. It keeps me focused and honest. In order to remain successful I need to be diligent in not only my food choices, but also exercising. Another sad truth, one needs to exercise in order to lose weight. They may not need to exercise not right away, since the surgery will allow you to lose, but once the lost slows or stops, one NEEDS to do this. Mind you, this comes from the person who hated exercising their entire life. But this past year I realized I will not lose all the weight I wanted without exercising. So I took up running. Again this comes from the man who wouldn’t run to the bathroom during an emergency, and would “let the chips lie where they fell”. I followed the Couch to 5K program, and ran my first 5K Thanksgiving morning. My next goal is to run a 10K,, which is March 20th. My ultimate goal is to run a marathon. Like my ultimate weight loss goal, for me it doesn’t matter if I actually obtain the goal. What is important is that I have a goal, and try hard to obtain it.

Some articles and/or periodicals that denote the high rate of band failure, compared to other surgeries. I am always suspicious when folks quote “facts and/or statistics” that reinforces their view. As the famous scholar Homer Simpson once said “Oh people can come up with statistics to prove anything. 14% of people know that”. It’s not that I doubt the presented facts, but I question “who did the study, and what was their motive for the study?”

Some participants or authors have skewed their findings. Many Doctors, and or researchers, have ulterior motives for their studies. Some are compensated by specific manufactures/companies; some have personal biases against a procedure, and then there are those who actually try to report unbiased/truthful facts. There are times when quoted articles’ findings are old and/or out-of-date. Also sometimes researchers either use a SPECIFIC group of people to study, and/or discard data/results that don’t bolster their hypostasis. Additionally, there are people who are very secretive about their decision, and refuse to participate in studies – even if they have been successful.

The band, like any of these procedures, is only a tool and cannot do all the work. The band does not control head hunger. The band does not control emotional eating. The band does not control eating the wrong foods. The band does not control portion sizes. The band does not control food purchases. One needs to be responsible for themselves and their actions, and use self-control at times.

The band is not unlike any other Bariatric procedure. The same rules apply to all Bariatric procedures. In my 3 years I have met band, bypass, DS, sleeve, etc patients how HAVE been SUCCESSFUL, and those who haven’t. In fact, three people within my family had the bypass. One had the operation about 7 years ago and has lost all the weight. While they make “look good”, they constantly “dump”. As a result, they have been in great agony that they are on so many medications they are addicted to the drugs and are constantly in a “zombie” state. Another person, who had the operation about 8 years ago, has gained all their weight back, plus more. Finally, one, who had the operation about 10 years ago, just recently passed because of a transfer addiction. Even with these failures, and others failures I know of, I would never tell someone NOT to get a bypass because of these cases. I know each person is different, and each person’s outcome will be different.

Many say I have been “lucky” with my band results, and not typical. While this may be true, I can admit that I know many banded siblings who have been just as, if not more, successful than I. I have also met many who have not.

The reasons folks fail on any of these operations are numerous. Some of the reason are: some folks don’t follow the rules; others follow only SOME of the rules; some follow the rules SOME OF THE TIME, some don’t follow-up with their Doctors/Nutritionists; some don’t attend support groups; some have false expectation what the procedure is suppose to do (compare to what is expected by them), and then there are those who do everything that is expected, and still don’t lose. If you’re planning on having the band, you may need to do some soul searching and recognize the type of eater you are; what you expect the band to do, and what you are willing to do to be successful. This DOES take WORK on YOUR PART!!

SUMMARY:

I didn’t write this post to argue, belittle or refute those who have either failed, or have trouble, with their band decision. As acknowledged, I admit the band is not for everyone, and may not work for one and all. This post is for those who are considering the band, and after reading all the negative posts thinks the band will definitely fail. I wanted to give you another point of view, and ensure you that is not the case. I cannot tell you if this procedure will or will not work for you, or you will get similar results as I did, all I am doing is giving my side of this procedure.

In closing, try to remember the band does work for many people. If it didn’t, Surgeons wouldn’t be performing it, and the F.D.A. wouldn’t have approved it. In fact, F.D.A. has approved a study to see the results of the band for those with a BMI less than 35.

Good luck on your decision. Know, not matter what procedure you decide, I will be here for you.

December 2010 surgery

Thank you so much for our own forum. I've been looking for others with the Realize Band.

I had my band dimplanted December 2, 2010 thru the Obesity Treatment Center at Catholic Medical Center, Manchester, NH. Dr. Rob Catania is my surgeon and I am so happy with my band. I have lost 48 pounds pre-op and post-op to date. I am looking for help with lots of questions as I continue my journey towards the new me. I am still trying to figure out eating with my band. I had my first fill at 4 weeks post-op, 5 cc's added. Then 2 more cc's at 8 weeks. I still don't have a sense when to stop eating so I have to be very careful and measure everything. I am so very afraid to over eat and stretch my pouch or get sick. I think I have been lucky and not had any reflux since I had a hiatel hernia repaired at the same time my band was done or any throwing up.

I will be reading carefully to learn from those who have had their bands before me. This is hard work but its so worth it.
Also, I started a blog http://roadtodescent.blogspot.com/ if anyone wants to check it out!
I would love to build a community of support in this scary, intense and exciting process!

Exercise and your port.

First of all, I am thrilled to see a forum for those of us with the Realize Band. I was banded June 17th 2010, second fill mid January and feeling great. I am ramping up my exercise routine and just looking for the experiences of those who have had the band the same amount of time or longer. At what level are you able to exercise? Do you still have port "twinges" with core exercises? Are there any limitations your Drs. have imposed when it comes to exercising.

I started the "C25K" yesterday and noticed some minor port pain after my workout. It has abated, and any discomfort basically feel like a slightly pulled muscle at the port site. Thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks for the input, and keep up the great work everyone!!

Hi, I'm jennifer! I had the realize band put in on 12/15/10. I had lost 90 lbs prior to surgery, and had mamybe 55 more I wanted to lose. I also hoped the band might help me keep off the weight! So far so good, I guess. It was hard right after, as I had it done right around Christmas. I got kind of depressed about not eating with my family!

I just had my first fill on Friday, 1/28/11! They put 6 cc's in my band, and I think I'm noticing a difference. I've been on liquids since they filled it, but I haven't been too hungry! I was starting to have alot of "stuck" issues, they said I wasn't eating slowly enough, or taking small enough bites. I've been working on that!

Thanks for listening,

5 days in to my Pre op diet and having some trouble

Well I am about to take the plunge, my surgery is scheduled on Feb 8th. I am very excited and nervous all at the same time. But let me tell you this diet is making me crazy I do well during the day, I have my shakes and a v8 juice for a snack. The evenings are killers. The crazy thing is before I started this diet I never thought about food after dinner or even at bedtime, but now I swear I could eat my pillow. As a matter of fact I found this website last night becasue I couldn't sleep, all I wanted was to have a snack. I found the lap band group first but I am having the realize band and stumbled on to this site. It is fairly new and not alot of posts, like the lap band, so I am hoping someone else will read this and get the ball rolling. I have 8 days to go and I know I will make it, but like I tell my husband, I am going to b*tch and moan about it the whole way. I would love to hear from others just to have that support, my family is all behind me but they aren't going through this diet. So while they are helpful they can't empithize. I also have had some negitive respones from people, two of whom had the lap band but regret it. Now these people are not my friends but are friends of people who are close to me. They are telling others to discourge me from having it. I can honestly say as much research I have done, I really don't think they are doing the diet properly. One complains of constant vomiting, but I really think they don't eat properly. I know they don't eat well, actually I have seen them eat, and it's all junk. I would just love some honest feedback from people who have taken a long hard look at their eating habits and are honest with themselves. I know why I am here and I am ready to change, I have kids and would love to keep up with them, be able to buy clothes that don't include the letters xxxl, be able to ride an amusement park ride and not be embarressed cause I don't fit. The list could go on and on, but mainly I am tired of being tired. So thanks for reading this and wish me luck as I wish luck on to all the others waiting for this damn diet to be over with

My Intro

I got "realized" on September 2, 2010. I had a low bmi by weight loss surgery standards, but not by mine. I am 5 feet tall and weighed 190 pounds. I was the queen or at least one of the royal servants of yo-yo dieting. I tried every fad I would hear and people knew that so I was always the guinea pig to try the new thing.
My weight loss has been slow, but steady. I have had plateaus, but I haven't gone up on the scale even during the holidays. I am still in the losing phase.
I couldn't ask for better help from by band. I have been able to eat almost anything. I don't crave the junk that I used to crave. My quantities are small. But, since I was always on a diet, no one questions it.
I have gained the love of exercise. I enjoy walking/jogging (I call it wogging). I went from walking 1.5 miles every few days to walking almost everyday between 3 and 6 miles. Let me be honest; exercise was the one thing I really didn't try before surgery. I think it was a confidence issue.
So, that is my story not very interesting, but it is what it is.

2 year bandiversary

I was banded 12/20/08 and am down and maintaining a 90 pd weight loss. I just turned 58 this month and never in a million years did I think this would work since the weight coming off was so slow for me. I have lost and gained the same 50-60 pds over and over over the last 40 years. Not only did this band save my life but I am off all meds and live a much happier life with people complimenting me all the time on how well I look for my age! I walk every day and try to keep active in every waking moment to keep the metabolism going so that I do not end up like I was. I am scared to death of getting fat again and over the holidays gained 3 pds from eating cookies and treats. I have finally lost the 3 pds and am going to try to get another 5 pds off if possible. These websites are very informative and give me the morale boost that I occasionally need when I feel I am slipping. I probably will always have the head hunger issue and fight it on a daily basis, but I try to keep focused on my size 10 pants and occasionally look at one of my old top of size 24 hanging in my closet as a constant reminder of where I have been and where I am at. I can't even begin to tell you how wonderful this experience has been for me and I am one of the fortunate people who have never had a fill. My surgery was done by Dr. Atkinson in Las Vegas and since then my insurance will not cover Nevada anymore so I am stuck trying to find another Dr. for checkups in the Arizona area which will be at least a 2-4 hrs ride from my home. I would recommend this surgery to anyone thinking of changing their life, but it is not a quick cure, there is a lot of work involved but if you make the commitment, you will succeed like me.

Hello, I had my Realize Band Placed Jan. 7, 2011 and I am feeling pretty good. I did a lot of research prior to Banding and felt comfortable the day of surgery. The minute I came home from surgery I began to think of million questions regarding my Realize Band. I called my doctor on a daily basis for first 3 days and the staff was very helpful. But I figured it was time to cut the cord and reach out to others experiencing what I was first hand.

I decided to start this topic for everyone banded in Jan. 2011 or anyone planning to have Band done. If I could be of any help please feel free to ask questions. You will be amazed at how many others have the same questions as you and I do. So far I have experienced insurance & approval concerns, pre-op prep, day of surgery, post-op and first post-op visit.

I am on my 3 wk post-op and have a lot of unanswered questions. I began to feel super hungry on day 13th and I was taking 40 to 50 gms of protein daily. Then I read that I should be taking 60 to 70 gms of protein daily. I purchased items from Bariatric Choice online and quickly reached my daily protein requirement. I feel less hungry now that I am taking my daily required protein.

Ok well enough said and I hope to be of some help. Welcome to a new start and the beginning of a new journey !

3 Year Band-iversary.

Since I am new here, you may not know this about me but I rarely toot my own horn, or try to call attention upon myself. However, as I begin my 3rd year as a Realize Band patient, I cannot express how grateful I am that I decided to do this procedure. I think back to where I was over 3 years ago to where I am now, and all the GAINS I obtained while I lost weight, and I am humbled. And I would love to share some reflections.

In 2007 I was way over 400 pounds (435 prior to the operation). The person who was once the life of the party was quickly becoming agoraphobic. For about 2 to 3 years prior I stopped interacting with friends; I stopped going to my favorite vacation spot; I stopped going celebrations. Every day life was becoming more and more difficult. I had difficulties doing my daily work tasks. I need to take frequent breaks from walking. Walking up and down stairs was not only difficult, but painful. Getting into and out of my Honda Civic was a chore. Not to mention my stomach resting on the steering wheel, and my seatbelt “just barely” fitting. And “hygiene” was beginning to be difficult. My health wasn’t getting any better. I had hypertension; high blood pressure; high cholesterol.
I was on the following Medication

Diovan HCT	160 / 25 mg for High Blood Pressure
Lipitor 20 mg for High Cholesterol
Coreg / Norvasc 20 mg for Hypertension
Carvedilol 12.5 mg for Beta Blocker

Secretly all I wanted to do was die.
In the summer of 2007, my doctor said that I really should think about doing something surgical. She stated I am young enough and healthy enough to do it NOW, but who knows what the next year may bring. She also said if I don’t do something, there is no guarantee I will be around for the next 3 years. Therefore, that’s when I decided to seriously consider weight loss surgery.

The question was: “who should do it”? After interviewing approximately 15 strangers (they were basically friends of friends), and on-line checking, I decided to go with Advance Laparoscopic Surgeons, located in Florham Park, New Jersey. In all my research (on line, and word of mouth) Dr. Abkin’s (and his partner Dr. Bertha’s) names were always regarded very highly in the field. On October 24, 2007, I went to their seminar at the Parsippany Tara Hotel. What I really liked about Dr. Abkin was his straightforward honesty. He listened to what I had to say, and respected the surgery I wanted. He never talked me into one procedure or the other - unlike other Doctors from other practices I met with where trying to do.

Come mid-November (2007) I had “all my ducks in a row”, and was ready to have the operation. I could have had it in either November or December, but I decided to wait until after the “New Year” – because I thought I would be in too much pain to enjoy the holidays. If I knew then, what I know now - I would have had the operation in November.

I had the Realize band operation on January 29, 2008 at Saint Peters Hospital, in New Brunswick. I arrived at the hospital at 7:00 a.m. for my 9:00 a.m. surgery. I was wheeled into the operating room about 8:45 a.m., in the capable hands of Doctor Abkin. Who would have known that the “old me” would have “died” at the moment I was wheeled out of the waiting area, and the “new me” would be “born” in the operating room about 30 minutes later.

I was in and out surgery in about 45 minutes (no complications). When I awoke I felt nauseous, and I had dry mouth because of the anesthesia. I had this feeling for about 2 - 3 hours, and all I wanted to do was sleep some more. Since I never had anesthesia before, so I didn’t know what to expect, but I hear this is quite common.

I was in recovery from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. I was home by 3:00 p.m., and I rested for most of the day. The only discomfort I experienced was a feeling that I could only equate to when someone does a lot of sit-ups, and an inner chest pain (which I later realized was caused by the intubation). No other pain.

The next day I still had the “sit-up discomfort”, and chest irritation, but felt relatively normal. By the 2nd day after the operation, I was back to normal. If I wanted to I could have gone back to work, but I decided to stay home because I had vacation time coming to me.

On the 3rd day I started my “semi-solid” (soft/puree) food intake. I had no problem swallowing or keeping anything down. However, I followed all the eating directions verbatim. I did not deviate from the recommendations. By the 4th day, I noticed I have not had any hunger pangs since before the operation. I also realized any “hunger” I did feel, quickly disappeared when I drank something. It was a wonderful feeling, and is an experience that I still have.

Since the operation, I realized (no pun intended) I have not had any hunger pangs that I used to experience before the Realize band. It gets to the point that I have to “force” myself to eat, because I do not feel hungry. I also realized any “hunger” I did feel, would quickly disappeared when I drank something. It was a wonderful feeling, and is an experience I never thought was possible. It’s an experience that I still have.

LIFE AFTERWARDS:

My weight loss has been called remarkable. On my two week review I lost 17 pounds. On my one month review I lost an additional 30 pounds, for a total of 47 pounds. On my three month review I lost an additional 28 pounds. On May 21 I weighed myself and lost another 5+ pound. On July 11 weigh-in, I lost a total of 100 pounds. On February 28 (2009), I lost a total of 150 pounds. in January 2010 (2 years after the operation) I was down about 190 pounds. And that’s where I have been since, between 185 and 190 pounds. There are times I wish I have lost more, but I stop and realize where I came from, and I get great satisfaction where I am today.

Since the operation, I consider myself an “unofficial” walking testimonial commercial for the Realize Gastric Banding procedure. I speak to anyone who is willing to listen, and even to those who don’t :-) !! I tell everyone about it, and I highly recommend this operation to anyone who asks about Bariatric Weight Loss surgery. I always reinforce that the decision is a personal one, and I would never sway a person one-way or the other which operation to have. The bottom line is to lose weight.

Over the past three years, I have come to realize many things. The one thing, life is a rollercoaster ride. There will be highs and lows, but the ride itself will be exhilarating.

There are times when I “slip” during my journey. What I do during those slips is very important. I need to remind myself to get up, dust myself off, and continue down the road. I can’t let those slips derail me. Using a military analogy: In my “past life” I would see a weight gain as a ‘defeat’, and decide that since I already ‘lost this battle” I might as well “lose the war”; admit defeat, and eat uncontrollably. Now days, I realize I haven’t “lost the battle”, but I had a “minor skirmish setback”. I regroup, with help of the troops (folks on the board and/or support groups); I get the weapons and/or artillery (proper foods) I need and go an try to conqueror my foe. I also stop and realize I have won more battles then lost, and I see eventual victory on the horizon.

I stop and become accountable for my digressions. I then go back to the basics, and try losing that temporary weight gain. I remind myself that this is how naturally skinny (what we perceive as normal) people deal with this weight their entire lives. HOW they react to it is what makes us different.

I remember, this isn’t a race. “Slow and steady wins the race”. We are a generation of instantaneous results, however remember we didn’t put all the weight on at once, it took years. So don’t you think losing it would take just as long? This isn't one of those miracle instantaneous weight loss programs. We all know types of programs always fail. This is a way of life. Nowhere does any of the literate state you will lose x amount of weight in x days. I think LONG TERM. If it take me 5 – 10 – 15 years to get to my self imposed weight goal, WHO CARES!!! How long did it take to put on all those pounds? And if I never get to that number either, I am fine. As long don't end up where I began.

I AM GAINING:

There have been many other milestones along the way besides the “weight loss” factor. I love to call these milestones “MY GAINS”!! It might sound funny, but everyday I stop and thank God that I am a loser and gainer. I am “a loser” because of my weight loss, and I am “a gainer” because I have gotten my life back!!

The main gain is that I have gained my self confidence, and I am again interacting with friends/family. And I have become the person who is “life of the party”.
I have also gained a wonderful bariatric family. These people are as important as my regular family. They help me along my journey, and give me the guidance and support I need, along with the love and understanding.

I have gained a special lady in my life. I never realized how empty my life was until I met her and her family.

I have gained my desire to live. Not just live longer, but to LIVE. To accept and enjoy everything in life, even if a problem occurs. I know that these stumbling blocks will be a learning experience, and I need to be grateful for them.

I have also gained new “goals” in life. The most recent one, is running. On Thanksgiving day I ran my first 5K. This is from a man who wouldn’t run to the bathroom. My goal is to run a marathon. Like with my weight loss goal, if I ever obtain the ultimate goal doesn’t really matter. What matters is that I have a goal, and I work every day at it. I realize there is no failure in not succeeding. The only failure is not trying.

The other thing I realized is that when it comes to WLS, no one prepares you for these gains. Sometimes it’s a bit overwhelming. I stop and think, “What did I do to deserve this?”

I must thank the following

My Family Doctor for being truthful enough to tell me either do it now, or you may not be around.

Doctor Abkin, the surgeon who was honest enough to tell me what I could expect with the band, and skilled enough to do a flawless procedure.

The various Nutritionists who lead the support groups I attend, and who answer any of my questions without hesitation.

My bariatric siblings. It doesn’t matter which type of operation we had, we are helping each obtain our ultimate goal.

My sweetheart for loving, and giving me another reason to remain diligent.

My family and friends who have supported me throughout my entire life, and have all supported my decision to get myself healthier.

Ok, I am done. Thank you for taking time out and reading this.

Hi,

I have been a member of LapBand Talk for a short time. I was banded on Dec 28, 2010. The surgeon I was told sometimes uses Lap band and at others Realize band. In my case it was a Realize band. One month out and I couldn't be happier about my choice to have this done. I have lost 38 pounds since my pre-op until now. My first fill is not for a little less than 2 weeks.

It is kind of cool to be the first post on the new board. Hopefully this takes off quickly.

Take Care!!

REALIZE® Band Adjustment and Fills

Gastric band adjustments and band fills

Periodic adjustments to your band will ensure that you feel satisfied when you eat and that you keep losing weight gradually, about 1 to 2 pounds per week. The REALIZE® Adjustable Gastric Band is one-size-fits-all, which means your bariatric surgeon won't have to decide which size to use during your surgery.

Band adjustments help you meet your weight loss goals

The REALIZE Band is adjustable, which allows your surgeon to personalize your band fit over time. After an adjustment, you'll be satisfied with less food so you can keep losing weight gradually (1 to 2 pounds per week).

Adjusting your band fit over time

Your first band adjustment will probably be scheduled about 1 week after you begin to eat solid food (4 to 6 weeks after surgery), to ensure that your stomach is healed.8 As you lose weight, your REALIZE Band fit will change. Periodic band adjustments help ensure that you stay on track to meet your weight loss goals.

Just 5 to 10 minutes

Fast and easy band adjustments take place at your surgeon's office or bariatric clinic—and they do not require more surgery. An adjustment in which fluid is added is referred to as a "fill." In this case a small amount of saline is added through the REALIZE Port, which is located in the abdomen, just under the skin. The saline travels through the tube and into the band, making the band fit more snugly around your stomach. This reduces the size of the opening between the upper and lower stomach pouches and causes food to empty from your upper stomach pouch more slowly. That's why you'll feel full sooner and stay satisfied longer after a band fill. An adjustment can also involve removing saline from the band through the port.

Your band adjustment schedule

There is no set schedule for band adjustments because each person's needs are different. Listening to your band (paying attention to physical signs) and tracking your weight loss will help you to know when it may be time for an adjustment.

Use the REALIZE mySUCCESS® Program to track your weight, your measurements, and what you eat. If you notice that you haven't lost weight in several weeks, it may be time for a band fill. REALIZE mySUCCESS® can help you and your surgeon identify when weight loss levels off or is not occurring gradually, so you can schedule doctor visits as needed. The timing and number of band adjustments will be different for everyone. Patients generally need an average of four adjustments during their first year, two during their second year, and two during their third year after surgery.1

REALIZE mySUCCESS® is exclusive to the REALIZE® Solution† for gastric banding, gastric bypass, and sleeve gastrectomy. And it's just one example of the differences between REALIZE Band and the LAP-BAND System.

The REALIZE Port has the lowest profile of any injection port to minimize its appearance under the skin, even as you lose weight.
There are many different factors that affect your ability to qualify for bariatric surgery. One of the most important factors is your body mass index (BMI). BMI is used as a measurement of body fat based on height and weight.
According to the guidelines established by the National Institutes of Health, the REALIZE™ Solution† for bariatric surgery may be right for you if:

You have a BMI greater than 40 or a BMI greater than 35 with comorbidities (diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.). Carbon dioxide (a gas that occurs naturally in the body) is introduced into the abdomen to create a work space for the surgeon. Then a small laparoscopic camera is placed through the incision into the abdomen.

The camera sends a picture of the stomach and abdominal cavity to a video monitor. It gives the surgeon a good view of the key structures in the abdominal cavity. A few additional, small incisions are made in the abdomen. The surgeon watches the video monitor and works through these small incisions using instruments with long handles to complete the procedure. The surgeon creates a small, circular tunnel behind the stomach, inserts the gastric band through the tunnel, and locks the band around the stomach.

If the thought of surgery makes you anxious, we encourage you to attend a bariatric information seminar, hosted by a REALIZE Band trained surgeon. There's no better way to have your questions answered and to get all the information you need about a healthy lifestyle. You'll learn what happens on the day of bariatric surgery, what expectations you should have for recovery, and more.

How the REALIZE® Band Works

How the REALIZE® Adjustable Gastric Band helps you lose weight

During the gastric band procedure, the REALIZE Band is placed around the uppermost part of the stomach, dividing it into two parts: a small upper pouch and a lower stomach. The upper pouch can hold only about 4 ounces (1/2 cup) of food. As a result, you eat less food at one time, feel full sooner, and feel satisfied longer. The goal is to lose weight gradually, at a healthy rate of 1 to 2 pounds per week.

No part of your stomach is stapled or removed during surgery, and your intestines are not rerouted, so you can continue to absorb nutrients from food.

The REALIZE Band is made entirely of biocompatible materials, which means it's able to be placed inside your body without causing harm. The side of the REALIZE Band that fits against your stomach is lined with a soft balloon. After the gastric banding surgery, saline (a safe fluid) is delivered into the balloon to control the band tightness.

The degree of band tightness affects how much food you can eat during a meal and the length of time it takes for food to empty from the upper pouch. When the band is adjusted to the proper tightness, you'll feel full sooner and stay fuller longer. As the REALIZE Band helps you eat less food, your body will stop storing excess calories and start using its fat supply for energy.
Following my own Lap-Band® Gastric Banding procedure, I was looking for information and community support. I came across a few helpful web sites, but they all lacked a sense of actually belonging to a group of people who share many similarities, struggles and habits.

I've received one common request over the last year+ from members on LapBandTalk who've undergone or are interested in the Realize® Band procedure: An online community they can call their own.
